Today we’re celebrating Maggie’s 8-ish sort-of birthday. Because she’s an adopted rescue dog we don’t really know how old she is of when she was born. We guesstimated that she was about a year old when we got her, and today is the day that we moved into the house that we bought so that we could adopt her. Seems like a fitting day to celebrate the joy of having her in our family!
Adopting Maggie was a bit of a trial. I naïvely thought that everything was going to be perfect as soon as we brought her home. That idea was quickly quashed as we realized that we hadn’t actually brought a dog into our home, but a force of destruction, anxiety, bizarre phobias and behaviours. She used to bite the air when a truck drove by. She destroyed our kitchen floor, shelving units, and an uncountable number of household items. To this day she’s still deathly afraid of all sizes of boxes.
Maggie is much more independant than Bender, but there are still times when she becomes very needy and demanding of attention. Even though she’s a senior dog now, she still rips around the house playing with Bender (and rips around the house ripping up her toys, socks, or used fabric softener sheets – her favourite!)
Maggie was a frightened mess when we got her. She lost her family and survived living on her own for an unknown period of time after Hurricane Katrina. Eventually she opened up and truly became a part of our family.
Happy un-birthday Maggie! We love you!
